The Global Trade Shakeup: What It Means for U.S. Textiles Now, Kimberly Glas, President & CEO, NCTO
![]() | Kimberly Glas 鈥 President & CEO, National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO): Kim has over 20 years of experience in government policy development and advocacy. She most recently served as Executive Director of the BlueGreen Alliance, a national partnership of labor and environmental organizations working to advance the creation of quality U.S. jobs in the clean energy economy. Before leading the BlueGreen Alliance, Kim served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Textiles, Consumer Goods and Materials at the U.S. Department of Commerce. Kim also brings extensive Capitol Hill experience, having worked for U.S. Representatives Michael Michaud of Maine and John J. LaFalce of New York. Kim helped to organize, and then served as the key Congressional staffer for, the House Trade Working Group, a key coalition of Members of Congress that works extensively on trade policy and domestic competitiveness issues to this day. Kim earned a B.A. in History and graduated summa cum laude from the State University of New York at Geneseo. |

The Future Textiles Council: An Alliance for Industry Revitalization, Karl Aspelund, University of Rhode Island & Michael Woody, Trans-Tex LLC
![]() | The Future Textiles Council is a partnership of the University of Rhode Island鈥檚 Textiles Department (TMD) and the Rhode Island Textile Innovation Network (RITIN). The Council convenes an alliance of regional stakeholders to identify critical needs within the textile supply chain, ideate solutions, and implement strategies. The Council鈥檚 collaborative model offers a framework for regional revitalization that could be replicated across the country. Michael Woody, RITIN Chair and CEO of Trans-Tex LLC, provides the industry perspective. Dr. Karl Aspelund, a University of Rhode Island professor of design and design theory and futurist, brings the historical and academic rationale. Attendees will gain insights into fostering partnerships between textile companies, education at all levels and regional organizations, to bridge the skills gap, promote research, and ensure the economic vitality of our textile companies. Karl Aspelund is Associate Director of the University of Rhode Island's Honors Program, Associate Professor in the Department of Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design, and holds a visiting professorship in Ethnology at the University of Iceland. With a Ph.D. in Anthropology of Material Culture from Boston University, his research on textiles for spaceflight turned his focus to circular economies, now central to his teaching. Aspelund has authored three design textbooks, including "The Design Process" (5th ed. coming next year,) and co-authored a volume on Icelandic culture-creation nominated for the 2017 Icelandic Literary Prize. Aspelund also authored a three-part Applied Technology Series, 鈥淭extile Needs and Constraints for Intravehicular Activity in Long-Duration Spaceflight,鈥 published in 秀色直播Review in 2017. Michael Woody is CEO of Trans-Tex LLC, a textile company based in Cranston, RI. He is currently chair of the Rhode Island Textile Innovation Network (RITIN) a past president of the Narrow Fabrics Institute (NFI), a division of the Advanced Textile Association (ATA), and a member of former Rhode Island governor Gina Raimondo's Manufacturing Advisory Council. In 2017, his book, American Dragon: Winning the Global Manufacturing War Using the Universal Principles of Fewer, Faster, and Finer, was named a finalist for Business and Economics Book of the Year by Foreword Indies. |
