The Grady, Hauser, Houser, Daniels Graduate Fellowship is a $5,000 fellowship for a graduate level student in Polymer Science at the North Carolina State University Wilson College of Textiles. The Connelly/Perkins Graduate Fellowship is a $5,000 fellowship for a graduate level student at the Clemson University Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE).

Grady, Hauser, Houser, Daniels Graduate Fellowship: Andrew Hall

I am a PhD student in Fiber and Polymer Science at NC State University, and from Burlington, NC.听 Currently, I am working on a project focused on fire investigators with the goal of improving their protection from chemical contamination after a fireground scenario. I plan to continue doing textiles research with the focus on protecting others from chemical contamination. With the rising concern of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), I plan to work on finding alternatives for durable water repellant finishes. Receiving this fellowship is encouraging, informing me that others see my potential and want me to achieve my goals.

Connelly/Perkins Graduate Fellowship: Lauren Slann

I was born and raised in Clemson, SC and am a third-generation legacy at Clemson University. I just graduated summa cum laude with my B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering and a minor in Chemistry. I am currently a graduate student at Clemson and am pursuing my M.S. degree in Materials Science and Engineering as well as Automotive Engineering. During my undergrad I worked in recruiting for the Clemson Football team, was an ambassador for the college of engineering, and was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), the Clemson dog agility club, Society of Women Engineers (SWE), and Clemson Formula SAE. Outside of these clubs, you can find me attending sporting events (or watching them on tv), reading, gardening, traveling, and playing with my dachshund named Ollie.

My current research position is at the Clemson Composites Center at the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR). My research is focused on bio-based sustainably derived polymers. Most of my research focuses on utilizing lignin, one of Earth鈥檚 most abundant biopolymers, and a common waste product of paper production. I research techniques to use lignin as a bio-based feedstock to create polyurethanes in a green, non-toxic way, as opposed to the normal method that uses diisocyanates, which are very harmful and are cancer causing. In addition to this, my research group is beginning work on recycling Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) printed polyamide powder, to minimize waste and upcycle the powder into more products.

I was elated and so thankful to learn that I had been awarded this scholarship. I am very grateful for this generous financial assistance towards my higher education. This scholarship means a lot to me, not only because it will help me finance my education, but it ensures that I can take some of the responsibility off of my family. In addition to this, this scholarship recognizes my passion in my field and helps reassure me that I am exactly where I am supposed to be.

My goal is to work in industry for a large company, possibly an automotive company, to work on waste reduction and sustainable materials practices. I have interned with General Electric (GE) Aviation and Corning Optical Communications and have been given a great opportunity through these experiences to see where I could fit in to these large corporations and really make a difference. I am hoping to have an impact on the way a company can improve its sustainability and footprint and enact change wherever is possible.
