I am a Graduate Researcher in an Advanced Functional Laboratory based in Texas. I have an MS in Textile Engineering with a concentration in Medical Materials and a Graduate Certification in Nanobiotechnology from North Carolina State University&/jasani-family-scholars/8217;s Wilson College of Textiles and a BS in Textile Engineering from AC College of Technology, Anna University, Chennai, India. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Kanti Jasani and the Ðãɫֱ²¥Foundation for their generosity in funding me with the scholarship. I am honored to be a recipient of the same. Receiving this scholarship motivates me to work harder and do better research, while it helps me defray some of my research expenses. Having an Ðãɫֱ²¥student membership would help me continue use the resources on a day-to-day basis and network with the world of textiles even better. My research focuses on combining Materials Science and Bioengineering for creating Personal Protective Equipment for Medical Device Applications. In this regard, I have been working on face masks and filter materials to combat COVID-19. I am eternally grateful to my advisor and a mentor, Dr. Seshadri Ramkumar for continuously encouraging his students and putting them in the path of success.
I am a fashion design student pursuing my undergraduate studies at the Parsons School of Design, New York. I am presently in my final year and also completing a minor in Creative Entrepreneurship. Born and raised in Mumbai (India), I have always been immersed in an appreciation for design, particularly of the exquisite textiles and meticulous artisanal craftsmanship that I was exposed to early on.
It was this fascination with design that inspired me to pursue my education in fashion. My experience through my education overseas lent me invaluable exposure and a global outlook, equipping me with not only an array of skills, but critical thinking techniques that often helped me bring a unique perspective to the table. During the course of my studies, I have had some incredible opportunities to intern with renowned fashion brands like ‘Ralph Lauren’, ‘Oscar de la Renta’ and ‘Derek Lam’.
I want to use fashion to give back to the communities that I care about and bring to the forefront the ancient green practices of my country, while telling the story of the humble craftsman. I want to give him visibility, opportunity and credibility and empower him economically by creating a sustainable ecosystem. My design ideology is to incorporate ‘Evolved design thinking, with Ancient ways of making’ in order to make clothing that is both fashion forward and energy efficient, while celebrating textiles.
This prestigious scholarship will take me one step forward in my educational journey. It will empower me to realize my dream of being a designer who makes beautiful, relevant and responsible clothing for a complex and ever-changing fashion industry, having a global voice yet using a language that is my own.
