Darsey Family Scholarship:  Mary Ashburn Mann

I am from Wilmington, North Carolina. I recently graduated Cum Laude in the spring from North Carolina State University with a BS in Fashion and Textile Design, concentrating in Textile Design. This fall I will be returning to North Carolina State University to pursue a Master of Textiles (MT). From a young age I have been drawn to textiles and design and am beyond excited to further my knowledge and education. I am most interested in sustainability within the textile industry. I am looking forward to exploring how to reduce fabric waste and water consumption, while working with more sustainable fibers. I feel very thankful to have received the AATC Foundation Darsey Scholarship. This scholarship will allow me to really focus on my studies and continue growing my passion for textiles.

Martin J. Bide University of Rhode Island Scholarship: Rachel Arruda

I am honored to have been selected to receive the Martin J Bide Scholarship! I am going into my senior year here at URI, majoring in Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design (TMD), with minors in Spanish and Theatrical Costuming. Fashion is not only my career choice, but my hobby… in my spare time, I l0ve to sew and create historical costumes! Receiving the scholarship means so much to me. I rely on scholarships to get me through college for several reasons. I come from a very wonderful and supportive family that is always there for me but cannot contribute financially for my tuition. I also struggle with autism spectrum disorder, making it extremely difficult to maintain a job during the academic school year. My mom likes to say that school is my job, that I earn my way through hard work in academics and that keeping my grades/GPA elevated gets me scholarships. This upcoming year I am so excited to be living on campus for the first time. I look forward to not commuting an hour every day, and hopefully getting to participate in campus life a bit more. After graduation, I’d like to explore my options. The TMD program is excellent because there are so many possible career options. I am most interested in costume design, and I can picture myself working in theater or even movie costuming. As I mentioned before I’m also very drawn to historical fashions, so another one of my possible career paths is as a fashion historian, or in museum work as a textile conservationist. Whatever I end up doing, it will have been because of scholarships like this. I cannot thank you enough, and I will do my best to work hard in my studies and make you proud!

Metro Scholarship: Shelby Kanski

I am a senior Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design major at the University of Rhode Island from Dickinson, North Dakota. I am also currently creating my own minor in regard to Sustainability within the Fashion Industry. I&/textile-design-merch-scholars/8217;ve always been extremely passionate about fashion, but it wasn&/textile-design-merch-scholars/8217;t until I pursued higher education at the University of Rhode Island that I discovered my love for textiles and the role they play within the industry. I have combined my knowledge of textiles with applicable sustainable practices in the hopes of educating others and pursuing this as a future career. The Ðãɫֱ²¥Foundation Metro Scholarship will help me to do this, as it will support my upcoming senior year endeavors: I plan to conduct research on sustainable textiles and create a sustainable business plan based off of this research. I am extremely grateful to the Ðãɫֱ²¥Foundation, Inc. for presenting me with this incredible opportunity, and I look forward to pursuing these goals!

Textile Merchandising Scholarship:  Hannah Bland

I am a current senior at the University of Arkansas studying Apparel Merchandising and Product Development. My future career goal is to pursue a job in fashion design. I would love to then start my own clothing company after gaining experience in this field. Receiving this scholarship has greatly reduced the financial burden of my family, given me peace of mind, and will allow me to continue to pursue my educational dreams. I greatly appreciate your generous financial support and the opportunity to pursue both my educational and extracurricular dreams. It means so much to me and I find it hard to express my gratitude in just a short page. I’m looking forward to the upcoming semester and the opportunities it will bring.

Textile Design Scholarship: Jessica Crockett

I am a rising senior at North Carolina State University majoring in Fashion and Textile Design and minoring in Business Administration. Outside of academics, I serve as the Vice President for the African American Textile Society and webmaster for the Kappa Omicron Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. For the summer of 2021, I’m gaining experience as a design intern for Women and Girl’s Tek Gear, one of Kohl’s activewear private labels. Being chosen to receive the Textile Design Scholarship is such a privilege. In the textile industry, the Ðãɫֱ²¥is well-known, and being associated with this organization will connect me to other industry professionals and new opportunities. The impact of this scholarship will allow me to stand out in the fashion industry by highlighting my textile knowledge. My future career aspirations consist of implementing my values of sustainability and creating a positive social change through designing in whatever position I am in.

West Region Scholarship: Becca Ziegler

I am a third-year college student majoring in apparel design at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. Creative projects have always been a love of mine with a special passion for designing apparel and transforming my designs from my head to reality through sewing. My goal is that the apparel I design will inspire the wearer to have emboldened confidence and will influence them to further pursue the discovery of their own personal style. This scholarship will aid me in being able to continue in this goal as I work towards earning my degree in apparel design. This scholarship means so much to me, especially as I plan to study abroad in Italy this coming Fall term. After college, I plan to work for a brand as an apparel designer, utilizing my skills and talents to create innovative and unique designs. I am excited for what the future holds and very appreciative of AATCC’s role in my journey.
